I talked to a buddy of mine who spins hip hop, and he was saying that hip hop is way harder to beatmatch than house. I'm a house fan and I don't exactly think this is true, because in my finding there are fewer good house djs than hip hop... I think its because with house you have to seamlessly mix two songs without the audience really knowing, whereas with hip hop you can screw around like scratch while you mix to hide the actual pure beatmatching... What do you guys think?

Hip Hop is much harder because the bpm is so much lower its harder to match the beats. It would be easier for a hip hop dj to mix house than a house dj trying to mix hip hop.

I'm agree with you house guru. I mix house music too and it's very difficult to do a great mix because people musn't hear the moment when you bringin the cue track into the live mix, you can't scratch into a mix or make a backwheel. You must be the smoothest as possible. :bat:

u can scratch in house..........a local dj here does it all the time it sounds fenominal!! he scratches right before he lets go of the record!! umm i think they are the same to mix....just different styles for each genre.....i can mix almost anything.....but mainly house and some hip hop
just in house more loops....and hip hop more scratching i think...

I hesitate to say that doing something like scratching over house isn't right because as a dj you can do whatever you want, but I don't think it should be done... At house jams, the dj isn't the focus it's purely on the music... The dj should be ignored, it should just be a seamless flow of music... Thats what seperates it from hip hop, where the djs are the attention of the party and they do stuff like scratch and whatever else as a way of putting on a show for the crowd. Thats just my opinion, anyone else out there agree?

I'm not sure if i agree that the following equatuion is correct

House = 2 seamlessly mixed tracks

How many times have we heard (and gone Sik to) a mad house trak that has come out of the blue and taken us by storm? Or where the DJ has given us a cheeky little taste of what's to come...but doesn't play it when it should be played 'cause he doesn't have to...and he/she's teasing ya?

I'm not having a go, i just don't think we should make presumtions matching types of mixing to types of music, especiially budding DJ's.

As for what is harder to mix, I'd go Hip-Hop 'cause of the BPM's and the tricky samples they use so that if your mix is not bang on, it will just sound like a wall of noise when you mixem up.

The bottom line: house is easy as hell to beatmatch. Anyone who has tried can tell you this. To throw down a good, INTERESTING, and original house set, however is not easy. (which is probably why there are a million boring-a*s house DJ's).
Hip hop is harder to beatmatch, and as a result, mediocre HH DJ's end up scratching or backspinning every-other mix. Good HH DJ's mix beats, loop intros, juggle, and scratch in a mix from time to time.
Personally, I don't agree with this statement:
"but I don't think [scratching over house]should be done... At house jams, the dj isn't the focus it's purely on the music... The dj should be ignored"
Why not put on somebody's mix-CD and fire the DJ?
Granted, it is all about the music, but why not entertain the crowd? Ever seen Donald Glaude? One of the most entertaining house DJ's out there, definitely not "ignored" on stage, and he scratches better than most HH DJ's. Don't take my word for it, though:
" I hail Donald to be one of the most entertaining DJs in America to watch live." DJ Dan

Just my opinion,

i'm not into house enough to play it but i have to say hip hop is tough. i've just been trying to sample a little and beat match, and i have a hard time making it work.
hip hop instrumentals and instrumental hip hop BPM's are vairiable enought that you can't beat match some track without really effecting the sound of the vocals.

luckily i kinda like that cause its really fun to do with songs that people know. they'll come up and be
"what's this version? i know the orginal but this is much faster." thinking its a remix and are a little confused that i just played it at +6 or so.

they are both the same to me....soon ill get my mixes on the comp and ill show u guys some mixes of house and hip hop in one song.....

house and.... umm.. hip hop
i gotta hear that

get it up
get it up

i think its really cool. i put eminem into a house song called the snake dance...its so much fun mixing it

So you match the beats of hip hop tracks w/ house beats? They are usually very diff. bpm's for each genre. You must have to distort one track pretty drastically to match the timing.

Not if you aheva KEy Lock. I knwo I don't.. but they look interesting. i dont' know hat kind of equipment Omen has... But if it has anythign with a Key lock.. you might be able to tell it's faster, but it won't sound out of tune at all. Eminem has some faster vocals anywayz... The beat behind them is slow... but if you take away all those slow beats, and use JUST the vocals, I think it could be fast enough that you would be able to "house-itize" it. :p But hey: there's only one way to find out.... Post that track up! I want to hear it :) :):victory:

It's all music. There are no rules. Even better if you break the existing ones. As long as it sounds good you can do whatever you want, it's all about the vibe. If it comes to me, and if I think it will sound good, I'll mix a Defected tune into Bob Marley and after a series of scratches and a backspin pass to an Ed Rush & Optical tune... I don't care about being long, seamless, nobody_noticed_the_mix things, and about doing it by the rules that others invented.
