I think depends on what style of music. But if you have a heavy, deep bass and vocals, I usually like to go hard left and right to give space for the rhythm and vocals in the middle. Although I've never messed with phase offset so I can't give you a true comparison.
Don't forget subtractive EQ and sweeping the frequency range. By carving out space for each instrument's sonic space, can also make a big difference.
