Losing Inspiration?

Losing Inspiration
We tend to like our creative process to be as fluid as possible. Sit down, turn on our DAW, and start working. More often than not things tend to work out in our favor. However, there are times when this is not the case. “Burn out” or a lack of inspiration can make us feel frustrated, annoyed, and even cause us to doubt our own talent. I’m going to give you 3 easy ways to keep those creative juices flowing the next time you run into a case of “writer’s block.”
Leave Your Comfort Zone Behind
We often start to form a routine when working on music. Some start with a sample, some with drums, others go straight for the synths sounds. It can be very convenient when we’ve created our own pathway to making great music. However, this very pathway can be the cause of our issue. A hard shift in this method of creating music can be the best way to get that spark you need to get working.
The Discovery Process
Producers tend to have their niche in a genre specific area. Our clients start to have a fairly good idea of what to expect from us musically when presenting tracks to them. This can be a problem. By venturing out and listening to other styles of music we can pick up on a few inspirational queues. From the song structure of a classic indie rock tune, the mixing of a gospel record, or maybe the sound selection and dynamics of an international hit can give us new direction and inspire us being the music making process.
Taking a Break
I’m a big proponent of “grindin’ till the wheels fall off” as much as the next person; however, this can be problematic. Keep in mind that you are creating music for PEOPLE, not your hard drive. Take the time to step away from the mechanics of music making and enjoy life for a moment. Go to dinner with some friends, take a walk in the park, or even enjoy a new book at your local coffee shop. Whatever it takes to clear your mind, recharge your body, and give you that boost you need to be productive. Making music should be a fun and rewarding process, always keep that as the #1 priority.
