Let me clear up some of the Lauryn Hill rumors
I saw a lot of rumors about Lauryn Hill and drugs being the downfall of her career on the BET thread. Allow me to clear some shyt up and let you know straight from a second hand source that most of that is HUGELY overexaggerated.
Some of you might or might not know that I got most of my production experience from taking classes at UT. They recently hired a professor there, Mark Sarisky, who I'm learning from and himself has had a pretty solid career, working with some notable artists including Tori Amos, Swizz Beats (that's right, J-Traxx, SWIZZ BEATS!!) and, as it turns out, Lauryn Hill. I wasn't even aware of this, but we got into a discussion about art vs. marketability and he happened to bring her up.
Mark has actually recorded an album for Lauryn, a new year's concert she performed before 2002 (and if anyone can shed some light on this help me out, I'm from Texas and I have no idea what performance he would be talking about) although it's indefinately shelved and will probably not see the light of day for a long time. For the record, he had nothing to do with Miseducation or the Unplugged album.
Anyway, according to him, the rumors of drugs/nervous breakdown are pretty much just rumors. Apparently Lauryn just got a case of sick-of-the-music industry. After Miseducation dropped, Lauryn felt she could market and release her own material (she already produces most of her own work). Problem is, she's caught up in a contract that says she owes sony at least four albums. So, instead of going to court to try to opt out of her contract, she's basically giving a big fvck you to sony and not recording.
....and that's IT. No drugs, no mental breakdown, no nothing. As far as her sounding in shambles on the Unplugged performance, he claims it's just a case of her not giving a shyt at that point. The live performance he recorded was to contriblute toward her contract obligations. That was over four years ago. He has no idea what happened to the record, he just assumes Sony didn't think it was worth releasing. He still got paid for it (up front fee, I guess a pretty solid one, plus he'll make 3% of the sales if it ever does get released).
Keep in mind the last time he talked to Lauryn was in 2002 (it's not like he has her on speed dial on his phone or anything) so maybe she's gotten into some foul shyt since then, but as far as it being the reason she's fallen off, don't believe the hype. Not recording is just her way of flipping the execs at Sony off.
