So I decided not to wait for NAMM as I happened on a good deal for these items ($489 for the DN-X800 and $889 for the DN-2600F) they were open-box items from a major catalogue reseller.
I've only been fiddling with them for a few hours, but here are a few quick impressions & comments
both
- did Denon get the Roland guys to write their manuals??? Although the information is there, the manuals are very minimal and just barely sufficient.
DN-X800
- very nice mixer, sounds great, solid construction
- why is the power switch on the back???
- headphone gain is too close to the headphone jack
- headphone cue select buttons would be better below the headphone gain and pan instead of above
- subwoofer frequency knob on the front is a waste, for any decent pa this should be set once and left alone (i.e. put it on the back) - a subwoofer gain knob would be a much better idea.
- separate fx sends for each channel would make up for no built in stuff.
- overall though one of those nicest mixers i've seen, and compact as well which is great.
DN-2600F
- another good box, although as some have pointed out, it has a pretty steep learning curve - i certainly would rather have more buttons (or substitute some of the existing ones) than having to go through menus
- looping is really easy and pretty cool
- reverb sounds more like a delay with a little reverb thrown in
- flanger is really cool, but it really needs a high-pass filter inserted with it, because something in the algorithm is boosting the bass a whole lot when the flanger is turned on.
- digi scratch is a waste of time
- haven't used the sampler yet
- still getting the hang of cueing, it is not entirely intuitive.
- slot load decks like the Pioneers would be a big advance over the trays
- it looks like if you didn't select it in advance, you can't turn on FX while a track is playing, that is a bit annoying.
- is there anyway to stutter from the cue point using the play button?
- there is a non-trivial dead spot around the centre detent of the pitch slider, i.e. if you move the slider a bit, the pitch still doesn't change. this is really annoying
- a nice addition would be that if you have tapped in the BPM, changing the pitch would also change the BPM displayed
