is it beneficial for producers to release a beat tape?

If you intend to sell your beats, is it smart to release a tape with all your new/unused beats, or to just put them out individually?

In my opinion, i think releasing a tape is good promotion...an artist can look through a handful of beats by you and pick the one they like, instead of going through each song individually in your soundcloud/bandcamp/etc

Also, releasing a tape is alot more professional than just putting out some singles on your soundcloud

What do you guys think?

Of course. It gives people something to look forward to. Soon you will be at vol.7 and they complain that it wasn't as good as vol. 2 and 3. But they will spread the word about you more as an artist if you present yourself in that way. Instead of another dude who got beats for sell.

Tell you something.........your product speaks for itself. Put it in product form, not in selection form. Because if they get your selection formed tapes, they will keep selecting shit in their price range....which is free. If it sounds like a product.....they will feel that they can use you to make them "sound good"....and they will come out their pockets just off of the pipe dream alone. Aspiring artist are some weird creatures.....but they are easy to tame.

Make those cheap, broke customer feel like they walked into luxury car dealership.......we know your broke ass didn't come to buy anything.....take yo ass to the buy here, pay here on the other side of town.

No, not it is not. I hate the idea of "beat tapes"... what producers need to do is release compilations albums with artists, with their production on it. It will do more than a beat tape. A song is much more important than a beat.

Sure if you're gonna put it online and sell it.

But giving it away is pointless.

I've gone back and forth with the idea of beat tapes. Because very few people sit and listen to instrumentals. Like the instrumental has to be an artform in itself. But if someone like Swizz beats or Just Blaze released a free beat tape I'd be all over it.

So as an unknown I don't know how you generate interest in music with no vocals. It seems like a daunting task. I lean towards what someone else suggested and build DJ like compilations where your the exclusive producer with various artists on the work. That way up and coming artists have a reason to listen and they may want to fight to get on those tapes. As your name grows, the artists stature grows too and your tapes may get bigger. Also some of your singles can actually make it on rap centric blogs like rapradar or the like because those sites rarely write about beat tapes by themselves. Mike Will Made it has had a model that is working for him.

Keep in mine.............."product"............only rappers want your beats. So why would you give them beat tape that sounds like a selection line up? That's where people fail. Then the beats just sound like something for them to rap over....which is a win/win for them. You stop making beat tapes and they don't give a damn....because somebody else making selection tapes. Then you end up selling beats 5 for $20. But they got what they were looking for (if they even wanted anything at all). What do most people do with a selection tape? They run through it....this is dope.....not feeling this......hell they might listen to the first three beats and not listen to the rest. They already know what you trying to do just from how your "beat tape is set up......because it is set up like all of the other "hungry for sells" type beatmakers.

You can go to Sam's Club and get full eating all of those samplers............but you also wish one day you can go to that restaurant a lot of people talk about that has great food. That restaurant cost a lot of money.......food taste like......food.....from a restaurant. The only sampler you are going to get is the one off of someone's take out....if your lucky. And then you got to heat it up, and it won't taste like it did when it was fresh. But now you running around telling everyone how good their bacon burger is.....but the person who gave you that little bite ate all the bacon....so you really didn't have a bacon burger from them. Back to Sam's Club you go.......but you saving to go to that restaurant...since you are now some kind of spokes person for it...but never been.

What do you want to be? Sam's Club sampler give away or considered the BEST restaurant in your town?

The more people you have "truly" supporting what you have.....the more people want what you got.

The restaurant that looks too expensive for a person who doesn't want to dress accordingly.....will become a restaurant of choice for people who don't want to be characterized as "cheap".............even though it's no better than the other ones.

Tapes full of beats....................or experiences that lead those cheep MFers into wanting something from you one day?

Maybe it depends on where you are in your 'career'. For example if you are still building a name and/or fan base, I think it could help you show more of what is yet to come. If you are already selling beats I reconn it wouldn't be such a great idea.

I always thought instrumental beat tapes could one day create some buzz like the jazz circuit... then I realized that the "looping" effect of Hip Hop won't hold most peoples attention for that long. You need some type of "voice" over the repetitiveness.

I have one on my site. DesignerMeth.com It's some of my favorite instrumentals but it's you know quieter more chill tracks I know I can't sell to an artists.
