I need tips for fitting drum patterns with samples

Im using FL studio. I can chop up samples and lay them out how I want, and i can make drum patterns pretty easily. My problem is getting the two to match up properly. I will have a tight sample layed out then I cant get the drum pattern to fit how I want; either too fast or too slow.

Ive been doing remakes of songs to try and practice but its hard to even get that to work


Is their any tips or tricks to facilitate this process??

I can get close to how I want it with the FPC and PadKontrol, but it seems like people are doing their drum patterns in the step sequencer and what seems to be magic to me they match up so easily.
 
What I do!

Whats up Newbie. Heres what I do in fl studio to make my drum samples fit. Keep in mind please this just what I do it may not be the best and Im sure not the only way.

its easy once you get the hang of it.
1) I paste my sample into a sampler then right click on it to get the BPM.
2) Once I get the BPM I turn on the metronome & press play.
3) I past my Drum sample into a a Sampler and put that channel on piano roll.
4) I pick a note on the roll that fits the BPM closely. It seems best to find a slower tempo if you cant get it exactly right!
5) If its not good enough I adjust the pitch in the upper right corner of the sampler. This DOES change the tempo of the sample. (to speed it up)
6) I stretch or scew the pitch of the sample (kinda in the middle of the sample) this DOES NOTchange the tempo of the sample.
7) I link the Channel to a slot on the mixer, and insert an edison and record the sample at its new BPM and pitch.
8) I chop up the sample the way I want it in the Edison.
9) I add a fruity slicer channel in the sequencer.
10) I paste the chopped up sample into the slicer. (I use slicers for all my samples!)

I appreciate your help. I think I am trying to do something a little different then what you posted.

Im taking a short sample (no drums) from a song and chopping it into 3 pieces in Edison. Ive laid those samples out in the playlist in Track 1.

Im trying to take individual drum hits not a loop and create a drum pattern to lay over the sample that I laid out. Ive been messing around in the sequencer for a few days laying down drums in different patterns trying to get it to fit the sample but its always too slow or too fast. If I change the pitch for one sample, say the snare, then I would need to do the same for the hi-hats, kicks ect which seems like a lot of work

Make sure u cut the sample as accurately as possible...if ur cutting on the kick of the sample make sure its cut right on point...cutting a bit early or late can really mess with you lining the sample to the drums properly...Take that into consideration and utilize the advice that Adam gave you and you should figure the rest out in no time

There are no drums in the sample. When I try to layer drums over it using the step sequencer to make a pattern to match I come up short. Ive been at it for a while. I can layer with the FPC but want to do the pattern in the step sequencer.
 
HHHmmmmm....i can tell from listening to it that the string part of the sample is slightly off...sounds like they come in a bit early which would be difficult to get lined out properly to match drums.....thats what im getting form what you sent...
 
they start off slightly off, and gets more off as time goes by.
You need to run the metronome so you can hear.

Those strings should be hitting

[] being the sharp strings
{} being the long strings
 
I know you'll be able to lay drums on it if you get it on beat.

Right now, it's pretty much impossible unless you go for like some experimental type stuff.

so should i keep the original BPM which FL says is 44 or do about 90BPM which is what I want to do it at??? Last question I pomise

so i felt like being a nice guy so i remade this beat in fl and zipped it up and upped it...its not spot on but you can tell from the layers how i chopped it and so forth. I only made the meat of the track not the choruses cause i only spent like 10 mins on it. But here you go you should be able to just open it in fl studio assuming you're on FL9.

btw..theres 2 patterns one its the sample chops and the other is drums good luck. Hope this helps.

that helps me a lot. Only question is why is it at 182BPM??? Am I doing something wrong by keeping it around 90BPM?
 
The best way I have found to get around this issue is to make the sample fit the drums rather than the drums fit the sample.
 
oh sorry, the bpm is doubled its actually 91 bpm i do it in double time so i have more play when moving the drums around.
