I'm seriously considering quitting making beats professionally. Not quitting altogether mind you, just the aspirations of doing it professionally. Here's the equipment I have:

Akai MPC 4000
Digidesign MBox 2 with Pro Tools
Apple iMac G5 20" with 250 GB RAM and 1.5 GB ROM
M-Audio Oxygen 8
2 Event Project Studio 5 Powered Monitors

I'm thinking of selling what I have and keeping what I need to make beats as a hobby. Maybe selling the 4000 and getting a 1000 to use in conjunction with some type of program. I need suggestions to see what those of you out there that know what you're talking about have to say. Let me hear your remarks.

Pro Setup/Hobby Setup Same thing. Got pro's doing beats and Selling them with $1000 worth of Tools or less setup is a setup.

what kind of program are you talkin about?

Mpc 1000
Mbox w/Pro tools
Monitors
Midi controller

^ Can still make pro Material on that. But yes what exactly are you lookin for in software? diff Multitrack? vst instruments?

I actually don't see any real relationship between what you have and what you might have in terms of pro versus hobbyist.

It's all done to what your workflow is and what expendable income you have.

I know people who, like Cyko said, work pro opff a small select kitlist and I know people who have enormously expensive setups and they are hobbysists.

However, if you are talking about running a commercial studio, then that is an entirely different ballgame.

If i were you. I mean i'd just keep what i got since i already have it. Unless there is a money issue and you need extra cash for something else. Or if i was going to try Software i'd keep my hardware to see which one i liked best or worked with best etc

The only problem I can see is that once you get to grips with your 'new' honed down gear list, you might regret ditching the higher end gear.

But you have a point. Donwsize and downgrade your gear and learn on simpler and more easily accessable gear.

However, I think you are just disheartened with the learning curve of what you have so maybe a bit more learning and you might change your mind.

Either way, it's your decision and best of luck with it.

id keep it. nothin wrong with having the best stuff available evn for a hobby. i wish i could get my hands on a mpc4k

You could get one. But you would get a few years, too.
