How to get started?

What are the most important mixing techniques you need to know as a producer and how do you learn them?

I would advise the following: find some educational program of any production school (e.g. point blank) and learn mixing according to it. Usually, the first thing they learn is mixing with only volume levels and panning. Answering on your question — volume and panning are the most important and basic things in my opinion.

And don't forget the EQ'ing. I'm learning this myself right now and it can make a huge difference if you know what your doing.
