How Does An Interface Effect Audio Quality?

If someone can clear this up for me ..............I'm using a line 6 ux1 (toneport gear box) for my interface/soundcard and been using it for around 3 yrs.. Line 6 has tons of guitar effects and some vocal effects as well but alot of reviews commend it for guitar sounds. It has been said the interface is what gives you a better quality sound (im using cubase5/ blue bird mic/and presonus studio channel strip for audio recording). Im concerned that my interface being not as good as those like the m-audio or presonus intefaces made mostly for vocals. So here are my questions.-- How do you determine if the interface is a good one? Are there any specifications that you are looking for on the interface? Does the interface effect the quality of sounds when producing by midi or does it just effect the audio (like vocals) that travels the the interface?
