I use to wonder this exact same thing when I first got Protools. To do this, you want to open the Midi editor which looks a lot like a grid in fruity loops. You can adjust the grid for any time signature (1/4, 1/8,1/16,etc) and you can click and insert your notes there. It may also be helpful to turn the loop playback on so you can keep adjusting your pattern accordingly. I can't open Protools right now as I'm in class so I can't give you step by step instructions, but I hope this helps!
