How did you get proficient at DJing?

i think you need to figure out what you want to do. if you want to be a club / party dj, then scratching doesn't matter all that much. it's much more important to have a good selection of tracks (somebody already mentioned that) and to be able to keep the flow by mixing and cutting. start with your favorite tracks and practice on them. if you're not sure how you're doing, record yourself and listen back to it. or let your friends listen and tell you what they think.

scratching is really important if you want to be a turntablist. imo, that's very much a different thing, since you usually practice and perform short routines as opposed to playing for hours on end like a club dj. it's more about effing with records in a creative way, and the guys at the top of their game are doing insanely difficult things these days. so if yo wanna go that route, be prepared to kiss your social life good bye.

either way, good luck! :-)

Only you can push them tables...if you got alot of free time on your hands scratch until your sore LOL
