Im looking to record some stuff onto my comp. I want to play some guitar over some beats I have and maybe add some vocals. I was wondering what program you guys suggest for the recording.

Also

I have a FOSTEX multitracker X-24. its a 4 track recorder. Can I use this as a simple mixer when recording to the comp? is that even possible? would you suggest it?

thanks for the help im new to this

havent used the fostex, cant really comment on that.

but for recording, i highly recommend protools. http://www.protools.com will give you the info.

my opinion on protools: the mbox (the lowest grade recording interface) has a great sound from its preamps and a/d converters, the protools program is just too dope to explain in words, so simple and so powerful. you can do your midi-sequencing, recording, mixing, editing, fx processing (protools comes with some great plugins, and you can always buy a ton more). on all these levels of functionality protools is great. it costs about $500, i actually got a new and unopened copy for $400 on ebay.

As far as recording programs go the truth is 24bit recording is essentially 24bit recording there isnt really a big difference between them...except when it comes to plug-ins some prefer VST's some DXI's etc.
So outside the obvious Protools (standard)
its all about how you work and what works for you.
Check out adobe audition, Sonar, N-Track audio,ACiD/Vegas, Nuendo, throw Protools (pretty much the standard) and Logic (now only for mac :( )in there and you got my favorites

As far as the four track as a mixer...
if it has outs than the simple answer is probably yes..
I used to have a four track years ago and I used it as a mixer for a while.
Ultimately though its not what you use but learning to use it well that really matters...
good luck

is there any particular reason why you want the music on the computer, is that for master copy purposes?

Yea i have an mbox and it does everything i need it to do. I have a friend that is hell bent on doing what everyone else isn't doing, so instead of an mbox he went off and bought an omega by lexicon, and copped a dodgy copy of cubase because he couldnt afford both, and the omega came with "super neato mr record my song". I'm not sure if it was really called that, but it was something wack. I think problems will arise if he ever needs technical support because of illegal software.

The other thing is that the new mbox package (its different from my package) is all the extra plugins. I couldnt find where it said what plugins you get but i'm sure its on there somewhere.

Its also about what your comfortable with. Check out each of the progs on friends computers, or in the shop, and go with what you like. Maybe you like the zoom in the bottom corner of cubase better than the crappy magnifying glass in pro tools (arg why cant pro tools have that damn slidey zoom thing).
