Getting started with vocals

I really know nothing about recording vocals besides what I spent 30 minutes yesterday reading about it. I'm looking to record my vocals in a soft, low, and quiet-like style. It's hard to describe, but my voice is soft/smooth yet sort of crackly. It's an effect I'd like to keep in the recording process. My budget is pretty low because I just spent $1,000 on equipment. Does anyone have any microphone recommendations?
