Expert Producers please read. How did the producer create this effect?

When I say producer I mean the record labels who created the track for this 'artist' but the part that I need to figure out how to re create is an effect. It comes at the second drop. At 2:34 he/she really starts tugging at that 64 bpm beat. Is it a distortion automation that pulls the bass out like that? Thanks again

It's a combination of things. There's definitely distortion, and the bass has two distinct pitches: one as the fundamental note, and another a tenth (16 semitones) above that. Also, the bass lags behind the beat, which gives a heavy, funky effect you hear all the time in modern jazz and funk.

Is the bass nudged behind? Or is there a automation creating that lagging effect?
