So is the phaser pre reverb/delay or the other way round? I'm experimenting with differnet effects and I'm wondering what a more traditional hardware set up for Dub work would be. Also would EQ be the last effect in the line up?

Thanks.

echo is the only effect i ever really notice. from the good ol analog days at least. maybe some phasing or distortion.

anyone want to give specs they use for echo? such as delay, time(m/s)

if phasing is used i would think to do it last as otherwise the phasing sound would be changed and unconstant, as long as it sounds good, do it

Yeah I figured it was:

Instrument->Phazer->Reverb/Echo/Delay.

I suppose the EQ could go last or right after the instrument depending on what you wanna do.

coitus what are you using software and/or hardware?

no, i was thinking: instrument -> delay/echo -> phaser

i am just a dj with aspirations of producing with no intention of releasing tracks (at least for some years). i just mess around with playing instruments and software. turntables for sampling, cool edit pro for shaping the sounds and effects. reason for sequencing. cool edit pro again to mix. ive never created anything "good" on my own.

what i have seen in a dub setup, is that they do resend there returns of the effects to a new channel, and not to the return of the mixer.

in that way they come to this config

intrument - preamp - inserts (gate/compressor)- eq - send to delay/reverb/echo - return to line in of a new channel - eq - phaser (send/return) - subs - master

could u explain "return to line in of a new channel" a bit more please waxx.. thanks

What I know from Dub set up is to have your phaser, echo/delay, filters or EQ adjustable on the fly so you can punch in the effect quickly in and out. I think that is why the resend of the returns of the effects to a new channel.

You'll have a clean sounding guitar or organ go for a few bars then suddenly it'll get mashed up before it fades away.

I figured that a delay before the phaser would mess up the phasing whereas if you add the delay after the phaser you just get a phased instrument that reverberates.

I gotta look over the Viking Dub.rns again.

like i said

they don't return the signal that comes from the reverb/delay/echo send to the return in of the mixer, but to the line in of a new empty channel on the mixer like you ad a synth to a mixer, so they can eq again on the reverbed/delayed/echoed singal before they send it to a phaser.

I saw Dub Trio live at the Blue Note 8-27 and they had all their fx pedals (at least 7) in series. The lead guitarist handled all the bands fx realtime as they played and used an old Roland board to control other fx (no midi).Didn't sound like one in front of the other made a difference, delay this,reverb that, along with distortion and phasing. As far as traditional hardware that was mentioned earlier, old Roland echo units, spring reverbs, and whatever phaser/filters that were available were used. I got a Line 6 DL4 stompbox for delay and I'm still looking for a reverb unit that can be tweaked realtime (not too interested in vst). Alot of the older recording's reverb fx were made by kicking the s**t out of the spring reverb.
