DJ Premier. my discovery

i didnt know where to put this thread so dont get pissed at me...


ok. i worship dj premier. he is the golden god of music production to me and i believe he may be the messiah. jews rejoice, but what i discovered today changed my view on him forever. this may sound weird to lots of people who use drum sample packs and things like that to make music, and im not hating when i say this, but it just isn't as hard as making the samples urself by chopping them from old records and editing them. dj premier always claimed to chop his breaks and edit down his drums to a fine point of excellence but today i learned differently.

my emu planet phatt came in today. i thought i may be able to bogart some of that dj premier bass game but i was wrong. instead i found a wealth of drums among which i found a handful of samples dj premier used in his tracks. normally this wouldnt effect me, but i found the dj premier signature kick drum and the signature hi hat. (basically the kick and hh from nas is like) i was and remain devistated. my hero has been taken down so many notches of rep with me.

idk why this is so strange but it just seems like the alpha male kick drum that dj premier made; that i have been trying to emulate for so long; he didnt even make at all.

i dont know why im writing this but i just thought that everyone should know.

dj premier remains an unbelievable producer but at the same time he is more on the level of us mortals now.

Chopping up breaks really isn't that hard either. You should still love DJ Premier just as much as before :P

chopping breaks is easy. making them sound like sample pack drums is hard.
its just discouraging that preem didnt really edit the best drums he has
 
Either way its a sample. Whats the big deal?
 
honestly i dont see the big deal, i understand its kinda dissapointing. But when it comes down to it, if u like the sound that preem uses in his kicks, snares, etc, then thats what matters. And besides noone (maybe besides 9th wonder and in some cases rza, ayatollah, and pete rock) can chop a sample like preem.

hahaha, that was pretty dumb i said that but its kinda true...i said "in some cases" though, so...
 
cmon now, I dunno why you're letting this get you down. It's not like you discovered your favourite rapper never wrote any of his lyrics. Sampling is Sampling, whether it be the bassline, the lead piano, or kicks and snares.
 
The names of these artists are meaningless to me (old fart:P) , but I know what the guy is saying .
There have been many times I have thought something was the dogs bollocks until I fully understood it .
At the end of the day it is simply "progression of your own knowledge shedding light upon former mysteries" (that's another Foggy registered lyric:P) .

Oh and if the guy uses a single set of samples for his "signature" then , he is just lame , or as I was reminded on another forum "Play from the ****ing heart" .
 
Not that he used specific sample he was just known for using samples and being able to put them together well.
 
planet phatts aren't that cool. I have one too and i never use it. I may be wack tho idk.

if u listen to most later preemo stuff it uses the same 3 samples. kick snare and hi hat.
the kick and hi hat are from the sound module.

im not discrediting any of dj premier's work im just sayin that he didnt make the drums that make his beats pop.
 
no. there is a huge difference between a sample and something that is sampled. a drum sample is something that someone else made and u are using in your music. sampling a drum and editing it your self is a whole different ball game.

the point is i just thought the king of chopped samples would be better then that. i thought he built his **** from the ground up by himself with a few old breaks.

What does bollocks mean? Forgive my ignorance, (american)Ive heard it a million times and have never known.

I sure it carries many meanings.

Edit: Does the dog's bollocks has a slightly different meaning than then just bollocks?

Bollocks are knackers , balls , testes , undercarriage .... etc
The saying "the dogs bollocks" means that it is the best of its kind .

I suppose there are some strange expressions from the UK ! :)
