Whats up producers, i own a beat buy/sell website, Beat Sqwad and i am in the process of adding a custom beat service to my website. What do you all think is a fair for a custom beat? keep in mind all of the back and fourth that has to take place between the beat maker and the artist. PLEASE POST REASONABLE PRICE BECAUSE IM TAKING ALL REPLIES SERIOUSLY.

ALSO, IF ANY ONE CAN POINT ME IN THE DIRECTION OF A FREE FORM MAKER THAT I CAN USE TO TAKE THE CUSTOM BEAT REQUESTS THANKS.

AND IF ANY OF YOU GUYS WANT ANOTHER SPOT TO SELL BEATS, CHECK OUT MY SITE, Beat Sqwad
WE HAVE 50 PRODUCERS ON THE SITE SO FAR AND SOME REALLY HOT BEATS. CHECK US OUT AND COME JOIN IF YOU ARE INTERESTED

I dunno ur beats are alright but my antivirus came up when i went to ur site, it said "exploit Blackhole Exploit Kit [type 2336]"

thanks. we have way more beats than the ones on the home page. i dunno y your antivirus came up. i scan my site regularly for trojans and spyware and stuff like that.

Damn, the problem here is just what do you expect to get from doing this - chicken change or rent and mortgage money?

Answering that question sets the price range (I do mean RANGE) you should be attaching to your beats...

If I'm selling to make some extra money then my prices are low (under $100).

If I'm selling to make rent and such things (i.e. a living income) then I have to look at other issues such as exclusive versus generic leases and so on. In any case, I am looking more towards to $1k to several k in compensation.

Before others start in and say that those are outrageous prices, think about what your are charging for:

  • Pre-production time including planning and any sketching of the beat
  • Production time including recording of individual parts and any performers
  • Performer costs, either as a session fee or as a split
  • Post-production time including mix-down and mastering
  • Overheads to run your production facility - electricity, heating/aircon - even it is a split of the main use costs (a home studio using home utilities)
  • Cost to hire equipment or facilities
  • Amortisation costs on your equipment - what the accounting profession calls writing down/off the asset over time
  • Tax payable on the sale of the product
  • Factor in a profit margin that is realistic - rather than 5c in the dollar, it should be closer to 32c in the dollar
  • You can maybe think of other things as well

You will note that I mention pre, post and production in terms of time not in terms of product - this is because you need to have a billable hours policy to make money.

I charge $60+ an hour for any musical related activity where I am being paid for the work. My billable hours at home are more of the order of $120 and hour, as I need to cost in inconvenience, utilities, rent, etc.

Even running a website has costs attached - hosting, design costs, maintenance costs, internet access costs in general.

So make sure when you are trying to price your custom and your lease work that you take into account the time you spend and the things you use to make that beat.....
