Crossfader crackling, cutting in and out

Okay, I bought a Numark DM1050 mixer, and used it for a couple months, although infrequently so it probably saw only about three or four weeks' worth of use total. Over this period, the crossfader started crackling. At one point it got so that when I had it closed, I could still hear the record playing in one stereo channel, so I fixed it temporarily by unplugging one of the cables. But it didn't hold for long, and eventually the audio was cutting in and out with the fader closed on both channels, and crackling like crazy. When I opened it up to look, it smelled somewhat like electrical smoke.

So I bought a replacement fader. Same as the one I took out, made sure it was designed for the right mixer. Sounded great when I first put it in, but after only about two days of use, it's begun to crackle just like the last one. I don't have the cash to spend on fader after fader, of course, but I'm wondering what the problem is. Is this an issue with the mixer? Is the electrical smell supposed to be there (it's not strong)? Do crossfaders do this normally?

Yes, it happens along with bleeding on cheap mixers. My first mixer a behringer vmx100 took only a couple of weeks to do that. And I rarely used the crossfader. Either buy a better mixer or if your just mixing use the upfaders which you should be anyway.

Sorry, you get what you pay for in this hobby.

I've just been scratching so far. I didn't want to use the upfaders because they seem so flimsy I was afraid they'd break off or something...

How much would I want to spend for a servicable mixer? I don't want anything fancy as my budget is not at all high, just something that won't die on me for at least a year. :p

buy a stanton mixer, u can get an Sa-3 for like 200 bux. More than efficient for all your scratching needs.

I dont know, I totally aagree you get what you pay for, but nonetheless, a crossfader even on a cheap mixer SHOULD NOT die within two days of use...that is just abso****inglutely ridiculous. I'd call a company line or seek warranty information because that is certainly not supposed to happen. Don't really know electronics well, but maybe the mixer is faulty, or it has a short...or something....defintely call somebody more knowledgable and inquire as it could save you money.

I had that mixer when I started..and no it's not strange that the fader died within a few days. It's a piece. I used rubbing alcohol and blew on that thing before every use. Trust me, your going to want to buy something else. I ended up getting a vestax 05 pro 3. Worth every penny.

yes it is strange...a brand new product should not do that regardless of how cheap it is. And if it breaks within two days you ahve to be pretty dumb not to look into getting it replaced or your money refunded via warranty. why would you use rubbing alcohol?? It's not like im suggesting that mixer, im jsut saying that should not happen.
