Stuck below the heavens
Ok, I don't have the required posts to post links(noob alert), so you might have to look it up real quick or use your imagination. So basically, its a popular drum loop, used in classic tracks like Halftime (Nas-Illmatic), Microphone Fiend( Eric B and Rakim) e.t.c. However unlike more popular drum breaks like Amen Brother, It doesn't actually have a drum solo section. So I'm wondering how exactly did people sample the drum section and clear out the bass melody in the background? Filters are my initial guess, but you should have some of the bass leftover. In Halftime however, there is no trace of it. I'm kinda perplexed. So whats the deal?

The ancients often recorded instruments primarily to one channel, so if you work off the other channel you don't get as much bass or whatever.

Find the side with more drum, pan it all the way to that side, than make it mono.

Using some filtering, you can get rid of bass as well.
