Man I watched this movie last night. I was completely blown away.
CGI is officially 90% photo-realistic. Yes, 90%. That's my opinion anyway. I think it's incredible what Weta Digital did with Avatar. It's so immersive that you forget what you're watching is all computer generated after a while.
See, the problems lie where you MIX live action with CGI. That's where it becomes fustrating for animators. For the most part, Avatar does this extremely well, almost seemlessly apart from a couple of scenes. But most of the movie was FULL CGI, which meant the artists had complete control. Because of this it makes everything flow better and just plain look better.
What I like about James Cameron is that he doesn't shy away from getting technical with the production of his films. Apparently he's pioneered not only a new way of doing motion capture, but he's done his 3D his own unique way as well. Other directors of similar movies like George Lucas (SW 1-3) and Michael Bay (Transformers) just tend to leave all the CGI and artwork to their respective special FX houses, which in both cases was Industrial Light and Magic (< in my opinion the best at big budget CGI movies).
The story wasn't all that bad either. Quite often with these big budget films that are based on the wide appeal of special effects, the plot and writing of them are poor. Just look at Transformers for example. But Avatar's story is not half bad. It's maybe a little too black and white, clearcut, if you like, but it's very moving and it carries with it the whole backdrop of Pandora very well.
The one blight for me was that the Na'vi (Pandora's natives, the main race of the film) are quite obviously based on American Indians. It's a really blatent racial stereotype, I think, anyway.
So what did you guys think of the movie? If you haven't seen it, I ask you, what the hell are you waiting for?!
