I've always used a nice mixture of both. Some tracks, I end up not touching my analog synths. Sometimes when I feel like I'm missing something, I'll use the midi to trigger one of the synths to just layer something already in the beat, and it just seems to work every time. If I start the track with my analog synths, I seem to get to my destination quicker, works for me. $3700 is hefty, the Prophet 12 is amazing though. Also, the Alesis Andromeda and the Virus TI2 is my favorite in that sort of price range.. although you can find a used Virus TI2 desktop for around $1500-2k nowadays.
