Akai MPK25/Ableton connecting issue

I recently got into producing and am having trouble connecting my mpk25 to Ableton live 8. I've done everything I'm supposed to do in Ableton (midi sync, set mpk25 as a control surface) yet I'm still not able to control anything with it.

Could it possibly be a problem with my computer?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but I cant seem to find any info on this.

Yes, it shows up in live's preferences, but as you know there's a whole list of midi's that shows up in the drop down list under controllers.

No, the midi input light is not flashing when I hit the pads.

I've tried every USB port on my computer and 3 different cables so I'm sure its not the cable or the ports.
