Fruity Loops is a great deal for someone who is starting out. I think it's only about $100 now which is very cheap for what you get. Check it out on the web. I'm not too familiar with freeware sound programs. ReBirth and Reason are quite fun to play with too, but they cost way more than fruity loops.

but i tell you buy reason. its not very good to spare money when you could have very good software like reason for a litlle bit more cash.

reason kicks fruityloops away. trust me - fruits smeel nice, but reason smells like profesional dinner.
