Stacking sounds/layering/blending

Some of my favorite producers (e.g. Dilla, Pete Rock, Flying Lotus, RJD2, Preme) are masters at taking a sample, extracting/chopping up pieces that they like and then restacking those pieces on top of one another (or blending them together) to make a unique beat and sound. Is there a regimen or a method of practice that one could engage to improve in that type of "sample layering" production? Is there even a word for it?
