i have 1,500 to spend on a mic preamp/compressor, i was looking at ebay and found some avalon 737's for 1,500 used. i can spend 1500 but it has to be in american express, what else has that quality in that price range.
thanks

For that price range I would stick with the avalon. If your pockets were a little deeper I would say start looking into what charateristics you want from your pre,eq, and compressor/limiter because the price tag starts to jump. Certain components start to be seperated and you have to arrange your own strip, unlike the avalon. Here's a site to one of the many manufacturers http://www.manleylabs.com/promain99.html.

I'd get a Speck channel strip instead, it's not nearly as cool looking as the avalon but it sounds freaking great

A Langevin Dual Vocal Combo would smoke the Avalon:

Or get an API lunchbox with two pres and leave four slots open for future expansion.

The new NEVE Portico 5012 will probably give you the fullest sound, and its $1450.- for two channels. Image: $725.- for one channel of a real NEVE with two transformers!

This pre will drive many boutique preamp manufacturers out of business. Just go to the pro recording forums and watch the hype about the new NEVE modules.

DAAAAAMMMMMMMNNNNNN!!!!

Giganova, why you gotta tell everybody about this. Man, I was going to buy this and keep this to myself. J/K

Yeah man Mr Neve is back, I can't wait for the first reviews. Im also looking at the tape module that he is putting out next...

Yeah, these modules are gonna be sweeeeeet! Imagine that you could put all the modules together and cutom-build your own console! The tape module looks very interesting. However, we'll have to wait and see until the first reviews come in to get an idea how the modules will sound like.
