How do you know what key tonal riser samples are? Is it the pitch of the first key or last? I'm finding it hard to fit my FX in my track, they sound out of place.

Both are relevant any either could be the key. I would take a look at a chart of scales to see what key the first an last note fit into. You can narrow this search by focusing on the major and minor scales of the first and last note of the rise.
Trial and error is another option. You literally have 12 notes to choose from with shifting the pitch of the effect. Just go up or down 1 semitone at a time until you hit the jackpot!
