when mixing a track in pro tools. if you have created a master fader it is ok to put a limiter on it or should I just everything down so it doesn't clip. and leave making it loud to the mastering engineer?

You can put the limiter on the master out.
Just leave some headroom(In the limiter) if you send it out.

you mean like go into the limited and bring the out ceiling down?

mhhh.. why?! i don't see the point in leaving "headroom" (as well as puting a limiter on the master-bus) when sending it out for mastering.

you really should check with the mastering house about that most DO NOT want you to slap limiters on the master output for any reason as they are going to acheive the loudness for you. Slight compression ok never seen limiters.

limiter for quick mixes for clients = okay, limiter on master busss b4 sending to mastering house = not okay

A good mastering engineer will not want tracks that have already been pushed through a limiter.

if you need to use a limiter and your levels are clipping then you already have a huge problem.

loud doesnt necessarily mean better.

work at a reasonable level so you dont clip and leave your peaks at about 3db....most of your audio should live in the -6db range.

Never apply any effects on the master buss before sending it out for mastering. Just get a mix thats perfect you know like everything panned properly sends mix in real well etc. But yea that's a big no no!!!

Are people just trying to get post counts or does repeating the exact same thing 50 times really helping here? Let it die he gets it.
