Rim Shots??? What exactly is it....

Ive been producing for awhile and i have never used a rim shot in a beat...ever. When do i use them...are they like another sound for a Snare? please xplain?

Basically yes.

But don't limit yourself, I layer snares with kicks and stuff all the time. I even used a camera click sound effect for a snare.

i layer rimshots on top of snares a lot cuz it gives the snare a nice snap in the higher frequencies.

listen to old Mobb Deep and Roots to hear some nice rim shots. also, a lot of Soul/Neo Soul have it. Erykah Badu's Baduizm had a rimshot on almost every track. Her intro/outro were actually named "Rimshot".

some people use rim shots as drum rolls like nitti, I made my own rimshots

check the first song non my myspace. It has a rimshot in it instead of a snare. I thought it would fit the mood of the beat better.

It is also a nice alternative for cracking a snare off between beat 2 and beat 3 of a bar. Like" kick kick snare rim kick snare etc...
