Audio Interface or Soundcard?

Say I want to hook up my synth/workstation to the comp and do some sequencing with software such as protools, reason, etc and i'd also like to do midi controlling as well. And from what I know, I have two ways to do this.
A. Audio interface (ex. mbox2 or sapphire LE)
B. Mixer + Soundcard

What are the pros and cons of my options? And if there's another better option, I'd like to know it as well. Thanks.

If you want to go with Protools, you will end up with either a firewire or USB audio interface, depending on you budget. A mixer is not really necessary these days with home studios, unless you are using it for its mic pres, as you can get an audio interface with enough line inputs to monitor any synths or workstations...

What you might want to look at is an audio interface with at least 8 analogue line ins, and maybe a couple mic pre's aswell... There are a number of them out there, what you choose will again depend on your budget, and what DAW software you want to go with.

Good luck with your choice!
