today I want to talk about something everyone hates. Rejection. As creative people, no matter how much we say nobody else's opinion matters, to some degree it does matter to us. And nothing hits your heart harder than putting your blood, sweat, and tears into your craft only to have somebody say your music is garbage. I'm sure you may have felt some of those emotions when reading the title of this email lol! And to be clear, your music is NOT garbage lol! But how would you deal with a situation like that?
Everybody Will NOT Like You
As humans, we have a natural desire to be favored amongst our peers. This starts at childhood and never really ends. This is especially true when speaking of our abilities. Being recognized for your skills is an awesome and very encouraging feeling! But , no matter how nice you are, no matter how humble you are, no matter how generous you are, no matter how awesome your music is, everybody will NOT like you! There will always be somebody somewhere that totally dislikes you AND your music. This is just the way things are and there's no getting around it! Most times people define this dislike as "hating" and there are some people who do "hate" out of jealousy or envy. But, some people just genuinely don't vibe with you and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure you know people or artists that you don't vibe with. The sooner you accept that, the easier it will be to take harsh criticisms such as someone saying your music is garbage. Expecting some people to NOT like you or your music is the first step.
