Software guy, looking to switch to Hardware

Hey guys. I've been looking alot at workstations like the Yamaha MO6, Korg M50, Fantom G6 etc. and im interested in getting one.

I use all vst's and never really used hardware. So which workstation do you think is best to start me off?

Heard bad stuff about the Fantom. But really interested in the MO6 and M50. What do you guys think? Your opinions will be appreciated :)

They're all good but if you are going to buy a workstation don't settle for the cheap guys unless you like vintage gear. Get the big boys. Don't settle for a Mo6 just get a motif xs if u cant afford an xs used get a motif es for about the same price as the mo 6. search ebay for great deals but most of these watered down synths can leave a bad taste in your mouth especially if you want a lot of sounds. As far as what to get since you already have a ton of software I'd suggest just getting racks and using the hardware with your software because you'll miss your software sooner or later and racks are easier to intergrate with software than hardware.

Ohh alright thanks. But I was reading somewhere that supposedly the MO6 was like the es but newer. What do you think? And you use the motif I guess right?

No I don't own a motif. I don't have space for one and I am more into the vintage gear myself. Just generally speaking if you settle for a lesser model you will get bored with the sounds faster. The Mo6 came out like a year or so after the ES did. It has most of the ES sounds but not all of them and it doesn't have a sampler onboard. It was designed to compete with keyboards like the Triton LE and the newer Roland Junos G and D which were just slim versions of the Triton and Fantom X at the time. My main point here is don't settle for less. Why buy a Mo6 and in 6 months want a new keyboard because you feel u have used up all of the sounds and are no longer inspired by the board when you can get more sounds and keep your creative juices going. Thats part of the beauty of software production imo.

Yes thats true. I mean I do like software. Is just I want to try out hardware to see how I can work with it. And atleast with hardware you dont have to worry about moving all your vst's and plugins to another computer, if you do the switch. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. But i'm ready to try something different.

But anyways, im going to check out the es and xs. Do you have any info on the Korg M50 and the Fantom?

The Fantom is kind of a rehash of a lot of Roland synths from the 80s and 90s with a lot of up to date feature sets from what I understand. I had a Roland XP 30 from 1999 and it had a lot of the Fantom sounds. I sold it for a Mpc 2000 almost 2 months ago. The Korg M50 is a lightweight version of the Korg M3 which is the upgrade to the Triton. I don't have a lot of experience with it but as far as sound goes it is a step up from the Triton imo but not a lot. I have a Trinity rack which I use sometimes but being that I mainly sample and only play keyboards upon request from an artist I don't need a full blown board like that.

Thanks for the info man. I'm going to keep looking for more info on all these workstations. Most likely i'm gonna go for the Motif because of the sounds. I heard the Fantom sounds like Reason presets. If you ask me they sound kind of cheesy so I dont want that. And im not sure about the Korg. But again thanks for the info :)

yeah i could see the comparison but if u dont like the roland im pretty sure u will find korg sounds cheesy too. the motifs definitely have the most realistic sound to them imo

Hmm alright. Atleast you saved from that haha. Yea i guess the Motif it is. Ive also seen alot of good reviews on it. So yea, thanks bro

I have an Motif ES

I don't like making songs on it but i love the sounds.

Just letting you know.

The Roland my friend has (the Fantom X6) i dig the sequencer.

I have read that the sequencer on the Motif is kind of hard to use. I mean its not a big deal. Cause i'll take the time and learn it. What dont you like about it?
