sorry, what is a true sidechain?

On FL I've heard of people linking the controller to both volume and compressor threshold, are they both 'proper' methods?

I find it more responsive to link to volume...

true side chain is when you use the audio from another channel to drive the effect like a compressor or a filter etc.. etc..

I myself like linking the volume knob as wellto a peak controller.. its dead easy and works a charm...

If you have FL9 you don't need the peak controller method anymore. All you need is the fruity limiter now as you can see in the video I posted. To me its much faster and easier to do now.
