old mixdowns :D

It'd be somewhat feasible to talk about the production methods used for this particular track, but I don't think there's a specific reason "old" tracks from an unspecified era & genre to sound like...this (what, exactly?). For electronic music, the setups were much simpler: virtual instruments were just starting to come out, hardware synths were mostly still pretty expensive or crappy, drums for stuff like this probably came from a sampler and the mixdown itself was likely a pretty straightforward affair with few fx & inexpensive dynamics processing, mixer to tape/DAT/computer. And of course the style & overall sound of mixes has changed/evolved over time, both shaped by people's tastes & influences and the available technology.
