After lurking for a while I've decided to register and this is my first post in the community. I have a long ways to go on the journey to becoming a good producer, but I have decided to take the first step (or to continue from where I left off over five years ago when I had a decent desktop PC and access to Acid Pro, as well as Fruity Loops).
I am planning to build a fairly high end computer, with a budget of around $2,000-$2,500 and I plan on using Ableton Live along with some physical synthesizers and VSTs (run through Ableton I assume, but still have to read up on these), and will possibly be recording multiple microphones at once in order to attain a stereo effect. Also I will most likely be connecting monitor speakers (though I have never used these and am still unsure as to the difference between a regular 5.1 surround sound system and studio monitors, but I will get to that once I've built the computer).
I know this next part will sound pretty noob of me, but I've done a bunch of research and am more confused than ever as to what kind of sound card/inputs I will need. I currently have a Steinberg CI-1 external usb audio interface that I use with my laptop, however I have heard that external devices introduce latency issues when recording (espescially with VSTs). On the other hand, an internal device on the computer would reduce latency, but introduce the possibility of noise from within the computer interfering with recordings.
Also, are modern soundcards one and the same as the interface? Or do you buy an internal sound card and connect the external portion seperately?
As you can see I do have much to learn and want to build a great PC that will last a few years as I progress in music production.
