Extracting vocals from a sample

How do you guys take only the vocals out of a sample? I have tried equalizing it and adjusting the pan but nothing has worked for me so far.

The short answer is that you don't - taking an element away from a finished mix is akin to taking the eggs out of a cake after it's been baked.

The longer answer is that it might be possible to diminish the vocal enough for them not to matter, but it depends on the source material and there isn't a surefire way that'd work for everything. Filtering/EQing (usually with a lot of manual automation) & spectral audio editing (there's cheap stuff like Extra Boy Pro and the really good stuff like Sony's SpectraLayers) is a place to start. Usually the more processing/reverbs/delays/whatnot there's on the vocals and the more layers, the harder it is to get rid of them. Older records are great in this sense, since the vox can be relatively simple and sometimes even basic stereo center removal (centred mono vocals with little fx) will work just fine.
