44.1khz, 48khz, 96khz, or 192khz? Opinions? Answers?

Maybe I had 1 too many redbulls last night but Think about it, manufacturers push these numbers on the consumer like it's going to give them a night and day difference in their music. It's what they hight light in promotional material as a major selling point. It's from the "bigger is better" school of thought hence the OP's question "Was it necessary?" The truth is no it wasn't but it doesn't hurt. With that said, there does come a point where a higher conversion rate is desired. Usually, it's when you're in an environment where the difference can be heard. :)
 
I don't think so. It is style of music dependant though. Higher sample rates are more noticeable with genres such as classical but for rock, 44.1kHz or 48kHz is more than suffice.
