ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The former co-host of BET’s popular “106 & Park” show blasts what he calls the destructive messages of many of the show’s most popular music videos.

A.J. Calloway co-hosted the show for five years with Free, whose given name is Marie Wright. Both left the show in July.

“I couldn’t watch my own show with my niece on my lap,” Calloway said this past week at South Carolina State University as part of the “Black Student Today” panel. The discussion focused on the impact of hip-hop music.

“Pick your five favorite songs,” Calloway said. “Write down every word that’s in your favorite songs. Read it back to yourself and think about what that has put into your head.”

Calloway told the university audience he had vowed that after facing racism while growing up in New Jersey he would “never do anything against my race.”

“I felt like I was hurting us by doing what I was doing,” he said.

wow

now these people are starting to realize the impact the bull**** music has on the youth.

i'm glad the own host of the show stepped off and said i'm out

keep the music real

I think he cried because he was leaving a investment of time and hardwork put into something he loved. Theres nothing wrong with that.

What is a L anyways?

When Kaliyl was sayin all this 2 years ago i was the damn enemy. Yall bout to see what i been sayin all along. Go back through my posts over the past three years and youll see prophesy. Lol

Blame the parents of the youths that buy the music. Seriously if you can be brainwashed by some stupid song then there is something wrong with your upbringing.

People always gotta blame something. Entertainment is entertainment don't let it run your life

I can agree with him on that. That show was definitely geared towards the kids, and it's nothing but negative image after negative image. And that's what our kids are looking up to.

When 106 and Park comes on and my nephew is in the room (he's 7), I turn it off. Because I don't want him looking up to those images of guns and violence, and learning to objectify women.

We gotta have some balance in media coverage in this industry.

I'm going to try my best to balance it out, as far as the projects that I take on. For every Goldie project I do (which ain't for kids in the least), I'm gonna do a neo soul project. For every Kruger album, I wanna do a gospel project.

For every over ground project, I want to do an underground, Little Brother type project.

I wanna do stuff like get on the internet, and find a group like little brother or a Dead Prez and be like "here, here are 5 beats, completely free. Use my name and put your stuff out." I wanna help good dudes get on. Cuz we need that.

yeah...we need to give back, ACTUALLY GIVE, once we get into that position.

What kind of clothes do you wear? What brands? Why not just throw somethin on? Cuz it might not look good? How do you know what looks good?
Everyone is brainwashed by the T.V. Your whole life has been taught to you by the T.V.. You are the damn t.v.!!! Everything on that tube manifests in you, on you, in your neighberhood, in the minds of your neighbors, their children etc... IT IS YOUR F@CKIN WORLD Yo! OBEY The GLOWING ORB!!!!Lol

Honestly, i dont watch much tv (never have). I wasn't raised by the stupid box my friend. Clothing i wear is nothing special I dont wear Jordans,Tims southpole fubu or whatever your latest rapper or famous celeb is wearing. I wear Simple khakis and chucks man. Why? all guys in my family pretty much wore them when i was younger most people from cali where i was wore similar things. And it wasn't because it was Advertised by some rap artist or celeb. Cheap, looks decents and has a casual look depending on what shoes i wear with them.

Lol what do you mean how do i know what looks good. If i like it i like it simple as that. Just because so and so wears something doesn't mean i wanna wear it have it or buy it. I wasn't brought up that way. My fam taught me right from wrong from the get go. Kids today lack that. Parents allow there kids to be raised buy the tube. It affects some people different than others.

Lol man i dont care how much something is if i feel its a good investment and worth the money i will get it. dont care what it is or how popular it is if i like what i see i like what i see. alot of my fam was deep rooted in the black panther movement, most of the females were teachers etc. So i mean again i look at things alot differently than another early 20's person would. i know what would for me i know what wouldn't. And this is all due to my upbringing.

But,i understand your point and its true but again everyone isn't affected the same.

And to the cat that says his relative is 7 and he turns off 106th and park thats exactly what my fam does and when negativity is on television its explained to the kids/teens so they understand so they dont become a product of what you see today

you are lost. it's all programming.

it's called desensitizing.

i never seen a man dressed up as a woman in real life before but if i did i wouldnt be shocked.. i'd be like.. lol. that nigga crazy.... why?

cause i seen it a MILLION TIMES on jerry springer so i'm less prone to offence and shock.

same with music.

it's programming the human mind at it's most impressionable state.. childhood.

^ I can respect that, good view. I still say if your parents nip it in the bud at an early age Media wouldn't really control you if you can see my view on it.

Edit -

I guess what i wanted to say is. You can't blame it all on the media.

umm....

He's right
but still takes the L.

He was supporting it when he was hosting it. He was apart of the problem.

you're always trying to say something clever.

all the time. and you take the "L" everytime.

he already SAID he was a part of the problem.

you're trying to color him bitter instead of congratulate him for just flat out saying what needed to be said. cats like you are the reason that most cats dont speak out. because someone who enjoys the failure or "L taking" of others are so busy lambasting them for past involvement instead of paying attention to their current state of conciousness.

i hate that.
