tracking cd or download sales

does anybody know how to track sales of cd's or downloads without having to pay a mint to soundscan? what if you do production work and map out your contracts? how can you tell how many units sold to know how much is owed to you?
 
The reason you are paying Soundscan is the same reason people pay Gallup Polls, J.D. Power, etc: they are a neutral third party who have a history of being competent, with a brand name and reputation at stake. Is there another third party that is cheaper, but just as competent, with the equivalent level of brand name/reputation?
