I'm about to get my first set of decks. But after YEARS of clubbing, going to gigs, and overuse of my Walkman I know my ears aren't what they were.

I heard that DnB producers/DJs Ed Rush & Optical recently suffered from tinitus, which I think, is a prolonged ringing in the ears. They need operations on their ears to sort it out and had to take a lot of time off, and now are using some sort of ear plugs to cut out certain frequencies.

My ears are only going to get worse, but I want to limit the damage. SO does anyone know anything about these earplugs or preventing ear damage?

well only optical got tinitus. but yes, wear earplugs.
do this also during mixing (YES!), good earplugs can be
bought at your local drug store or guitar shop...

it's important... and earplugs filter out the muddy
frequencies

TINNITUS..

Yeah, i suffer from Tinnitus and have done for as long as i can remember (i'm 23 now).

I was born with this ****, so you can imagine how annoying it gets. Everybody gets ringing in their ears at some point but imagine having that ringing so loud it feels like your ears are going to split open (cos that's what it's like).

Obviously as i grew up i developed an interest in music which lead to me DJ'ing and more recently a novice producer.

The tips given to me by my doctor were;

Don't listen to music on poor quality systems
(If music is played on a crystal clear system, no matter how loud it is your ears should never be left ringing)

Don't wear headphones to listen to music at high volumes if you don't need to, (if you do need to, have regular breaks)

Avoid sustained exposure to ungodly frequencies.
(In other words don't mess around with sine waves in their highest or lowest key and hold the note for too long)
Just because you can't actually hear it doesn't mean there isn't a sound.

I have got some ear plugs from my doctor which do work, although i don't really wear them (i suppose i should !)

I'm by far no expert on this topic, just the poor ****er who's got to put up with it.

The only advice i can give is be careful and keep an eye on the levels.

Not wanting to scaremonger but this is an issue people really should take more seriously.

Rich.

Thanks for all the advise. Sorry to hear about some of the stuff have had to deal with.
