I've been guilty of thinking that if a person is successful then let him / her have their success and thought I probably was borderline hating if I knocked what they were doing... but...

Does success negate what the person is actually doing to gain their success. Like I don't have a problem with Soulja Boy but it seems some people do and some people think Let him do his thing... or I just saw a thread about JD being lazy with the production techniques - I didn't watch the vid...

Does making a catchy kiddie song or finding a decent sounding looping sample make it right to support this type of thing... just because it's successful. Shouldn't people push for a higher standard or is it okay to tear everything down until all you'll need is two dudes standing next to each other and one of 'em says "UNNHHH" on beat and the dude beside him justs keeps saying stuff like "She Like me" "Unhhh" "I'm Paid" "Unhhh" "I'm on Twenny-Fo's"... If that song blows up, is it a good thing?

lol... just wondering about the standards that people want to uphold... or not uphold.

I think I've seen this thread about 40 times just reworded or something.

Is all it takes is for something to make money... and then it's alright?

Talk...

You are thinking to much my friend. Its either people like it or they don't. If they like it it will sell. Soulja Boy didn't blow up because people hated him. Remember he already had a million views on youtube before he got signed.

I cant believe I jus read the word Coonism and second that somebody actually made the word Coonism! Wow that kinda makes me wanna go Al Sharpton on whoever made that lol But this has been bothering me too and when I started a thread about it I got told I wuz hating cuz Soulja Boy is makin hits and Im not cuz I dnt kno what the ppl wanna hear these days so expect to get alot of animosity on this one cuz everybody gets hurt when you start a thread like this lol But I agree wit you 100% bro

It depends on the artist to be real or the situation or context of the music. I hated Laffy Taffy, didnt like anything about the song. However, I love when Shawty Lo comes on in the club. Lupe's music isnt made to be bumped in the club, thats not the intent.

I think a lot of people (fans) expect too much from regular niggas. I dont expect Rocko to get Hip Hop Quotable in the Source Mag...but I bump a few songs off his CD everyday.

Just because he got a million views and such, doesnt mean we have to saturatated with carbon copies.

I think somewhere down the line we got confused...I was raised to feel that blacks shouldn't knock another blacks success, since it is/was generally harder for one of us to "make it"...soo maybe this is part of it, but...

I was also raised to be real and honest...and truth is, there is a lot of stuff out there that is "sucessful", but still it really is crap...Is it that hard to believe that people sometimes like crap or stuff that is bad for them?

So, yes, I've said this for years and will continue to say it...success does not automatically dictate greatness. Generally, the things that society find most innovative are rejected at first because it is soo different from the status quo...it's only after that artist's has come and gone do they get the magnitude of what was truly occurring...I think we are paying attention to the lil waynes and flo-ridas while the next big person is getting looked over...or becoming homeless or some **** trying to live as a genuine artist.

If I don't like it, I don't like it; it don't mean that I'm hating" --- Common paraphrased

why do people smoke even though they know it will kill them?

This will just lead to a convo that goes in circles.

But my opinion for what its worth is that music shouldn't degrade people as human beings, no matter if its made for the clubs, or hood, or not.

By that I'm not talking about "objectifying women" or any of that holier than thou crap...But when major media companies constantly put out only negative images of young black men especially, that creates a reinforcing feedback loop that pushes other expression out. Supply + advertising creates demand which creates more supply + advertising so on and so forth...Now the media companies and other forces in society have a convenient scapegoat they can pull out of their pockets whenever they get out of trouble, at the cost of the culture that consumes their product. "Imus (big money) is in trouble? Quick, lets find some rappers to blame!". And then when you look at hip hop its so sh!tty you cant even defend it fromt he scapegoating anymore...how can you defend goons who dont speak or think clearly and promote drugs and violence? You can't.

Whatever though...in the end you can just take care of your own family...I just know I'd smack the dogsh!t out of my sons if they ever swag around the house talking ebonics and looking like souja boy. Low expectations get low results, and I think the passivity of the culture to say "oh, let that little ignorant person be, he's just doing him" sets low expectations for youth which in turn gets bad results.

man.. im not to sure. I've been fukin wit the mixtape scene lately.

and I've shown love to artists that I support due to the love that they show me.. even if I don't like there music..

id rather support a person with lower quality music. who I can relate to, that I can speak to on a regular basis..

then some dude who spits "real hip hop" and thinks his ish don't stink

these guys make kiddie songs... aren't looking to be part of this massive mass carbon formula

VIC was makin those retarded songs forever
same wit Soulja Boy

they just happen to be wats really popular...

idk...

at the end of the day..

I support artists I like.... music I like, and movements I like

and Tomorrow and Karma are my fav Rocko Joints

Good point derkid

Rome, its a real thin line between people being seen as haters as opposed to being advocates to stop ignorance. I struggle with this issue myself...should I support a rapper who glorifies drugs, violence and such? But then again when I hear the song in the club I'm like "THATS MY JOINT!!". Do I think Soulja Boy is ignorant? YEP! But would I love to do a track for him? YEP! This is a tough one man.

but I mean wat makes soulja boy ignorant??

he's a 17 year old kid.. dancing...

how is that ignorant

I dance. I just wasn't smart enough to make money off of my fun

If souljaboi call me right now, I would catch a bus (ha, flying..) and drive down to the ATL, and make him a beat the bathroom of DJ Smuf's studio if need be. Some of ya'll be on that HATERADE. And I dont even make his kind of music...

He is ignorant and I fail to see how you do not notice. He is doing more than dancing...listen to his lyrics. A seventeen year old making a song called Doo doo head? Come on homie...how can you justify that? My seven year old niece dont even say that.
