Need help with recording samples

I have a 3.5mm jack running from computer audio out to 1/4 phono jack into the drum machine, but there's no sound when I record a sample into it. It's a ZoomSampleTrak st-224 if that matters.

Have you checked to make sure that the cable is good?

Are you putting the 1/4 end into the "input" section marked "L/Mono?"

Yeah I'm putting the 1/4 end in "L/Mono" and I just got the cables so I would think they were good, but idk.
 
How do you set the input volume on the SampleTrak? I mean literally, how-- I don't have one. When you do that, is the gain set pretty "hot?" Can you monitor input signals with headphones? Do you? What are you hearing?
