A little pointer I got from my friend back in the day is, add more shakers. For example, if you've already got the beat sounding how you want it, and you can't think of how to switch it up for the hook, just add shakers. Even if there's already shakers or hi hats in the beat, that new layer of different shakers (or even hi hats) makes it sound a little more live.
