Hi
Im working on a IDM project at the moment and ive got the track 98% finished. When listening to the melody it seems a bit too rigid or something. What can i to to make it a bit more.... flowing/elusive (but not too much) i guess. I also cant seem to find the humanize funtion on Sx!.

Helps
Jon

I dunno, but SX specifically, but it sounds like you quantized heavily, a little, swing can add that bit of flavor

Also when you quantize if you want to keep a little bit of your human feel into it lower the intensity, which will affect how strongly it quantizes your hits to the nearest quantize point

Just to clarify, eddieraver: quantising in SX is the 'humanising' function you're looking for :)

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I just try to make the songs without the use of quantization. I'll make the beats and other elements of composition and then go back and tweak the things that sound too "human", and loosen up some sounds when they sound too rigid. Sometimes just listening to the song after I'm done and getting a friend to listen will help me out. :)

I take off the quantizing for drum rolls and hi hats. I also play samples at different velocities. No real musician plays every note at the same velocity. Also, if I sample a chord for example, I'll copy it and put a little extra time before the start of the sample so that it doesn't start exactly on beat and use both samples during the song.

Yeah....having sounds go loose on certain areas of the composition really adds to the sincerity of the track. It seems more like actual instruments and less like it all was done on the pc or workstation.

hi.

Quantizing is pure evil, turn that mother off before recording then after you can adjust the notes if they are badly off. Otherwise your music will sound like a robotdemo (not always a bad thing)
Also if you work with samples and a sampler its sometimes ok to edit your samples roughly (& quickly) this can give songs a bit of shuffle and charekter....or like most of my songs just make them sound sh**e.

LOL...I didn't want to say that...but you said it for me. I couldn't agree more. :)

if you know how to properly use quantize, it can do wonders, of course you don't quantize every single thing, nor do the things you quantize do you quantize @ 100% intensity

But if you already have a good sense of rhythm, you can just keep it off

That's precisely it. If you have good sense of rythym you don't need to use it. I hope that most of us producers have good rythym. At least enough to see a beat that's off.

the only time i would quantize if its to noticably off and im to lazy to redo it.or if i just cant get a note in a certain spot no matter how hard i try.u think quantizing any drums or hh sucks the life out the track.

phatkat,

You mentioned quantizing sucking the life out of a track. I honestly believe this is true and agree completely.

I consider shuffling around beats manually part of the creative process and often sparks great ideas.

By and large, quantizing isn't so much being lazy. It feels more like something that's completely unnecessary and stifles your creative control. :)
