The problem is that people these days don't really understand what their audience wants.

My solution is simple:

First, you want to know your audience. You want to study them, find out what they are into, what problems they have, what makes them happy, etc. A good way to find out what your audience wants and likes from you is by simply testing... A LOT.

Test different kind of music and styles you present. Even test stuff like your marketing style or the way you communicate with your fans. When you test you want to figure which ways to present yourself works and which ones don't. The ones that don't work you want to trash them. Focus on the stuff that works, the things that bring you results. Only those.

Don't be selfish now, if you are making boom-bap, but your audience wants Trap music, then make Trap music. In business it really isn't about yourself, it is about others, and how you serve them.

Remember that the more you know about your audience, the better you can make your music.

If you're a producer/beatmaker, you don't have "fans".
You have clients and/or peers that appreciate your work.

Your 'business angle' is based on what's the most popular.
I think it's better to find out WHO you are and WHAT you love to do and do that.
Get good at that and then find your audience.

The opposite is forcing yourself to do something you really don't want to do for the "fantasy" payday you imagine getting at some point.

If you have a legitimate stream of work, then I could see taking advantage, using your overall talent to make use of a 'lucky situation".
But I think that's 1% of the cats on here.

Stop using sample-packs and soundbanks. Learn do make your own sounds and HAVE YOUR OWN FACE

THANKYOU. Yeah sample packs are cool when you're just learning and all, but there's no originality in using them. Pluss you have much less control over them.

Yeah I agree with this post. If your heart isn't in it you will never be better than those that are!

You are better off sticking to you, and carving your niche out of something you love.

Myself I strive to be as versatile as I can be across genres, if I feel like making boom bap, that's what's happening, or if I feel like making love songs that's what's happening.

Just because one certain type of genre is hot at the moment, doesn't mean that people don't stop listening to others, if that was the case the only type of music that would exist is rehashed over and over because it was hot at the time.

Other Business usually either completely specialise because of technical reasons or otherwise cater for a more general purpose, offering a broader range of services or products to stay competitive.

So it's up to you what you want to do but I'm just saying don't get stuck doing stuff that you really haven't got the heart in.
