Hi All!

Can anyone tell me where the whale sound (think it's a whale sound) is from at 13 seconds and on...

YouTube

It's been used extensively on trance, hardcore and drum 'n' bass track in the early days.

Thanks!

It could be lots of things. A manipulated vocal sample, a synth, a combination, a tweaked sound from plastic scraping together, or actually might be a whale...

The “seagulls” on the Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows” is a sped-up tape-loop of laughing. I made some otherworldly sounds by doing the opposite (slowing down actual seagulls and mixing that with slowed down bubbles).

Experiment, and see how close you can get, if you can’t find a clean sample to snatch somewhere.

I'm gonna agree with Gregg here and also add that it sounds like a guitar to me. A pick/string scrape recorded with a room mic rather than a close cab mic and then effected/treated in post.
