I want to make deep house and am wondering when I make a beat what for rythm to choose. follow the rythm of bassline or melody? are there some basic rules to follow when to choose when you are making a pattern for you melody and bass ?

while listening to your beat melody(the strings instruments) bop to your beat and vibe along.. make different drum pattern sounds with your mouth to it.. and recreate the one that goes better with it in your daw

    kick x---x---x---x---
    snare ----x-------x---
    hat --x---x---x---x-

That's the basic 'four to the floor' pattern for house and techno... you can do variations, leave things out.
For deep house you may want to forego or offset the snare and experiment with different hi-hat sounds and patterns, maybe add some swing or groove.
Another percussion you want to add to that can play any rhythm, this is just the basic pulse.
