What instrument is that signature west coast sound?

I'm currently trying to make a "west coast" type of beat, and I'm wondering what instrument is that high pitched whining type of sound in a lot of west coast beats? I know some people sample "Ohio Players," but I'm trying to make it from scratch. Does anyone know? Thank you!

I think it's some kind of saw-wave synth with a lot of pitch-bending and whatnot.

thanks for the reply man. and yeah i figured its from a synth, so i tried messing with all of of the synthesizers on logic express, but I just cant achieve that sound. =(

It's a high-pitched whistle. If you can't find it, might have to make it yourself. In Reason's Thor module there's a preset for it already, but you... probably... aren't using that...

you also need to play with the portamento, glide and a bit of the filter cutoff to smooth out the sound.
