Ways to add variations to beats?

Adding transitions to create ambiance helps a lot more than you'd think. When I learned how to make white noise sweeps, it brought my music up a notch because of the life it gave the beat. Creating lifters, sweeps, and other transition-type sounds will help with variation in a subtle way.

Right now I'm in the same boat as you, but I find that a lot of music is pretty repetitive. Somehow they capture our attention with the same 8/16 bar loops, but it just adds/subtracts different parts of the track to sound like there was a real change. Try experimenting with that and see if its a direction that you like.
