Using a mixer to make unsettling noises?

Hey, newbie here. I've been fascinated with this band lately who use a bunch of pedals and a mixer to create some really surreal sounds. At 32 seconds in to this video, the guy turns a dial on a mixer to make a dark howling sound. I really have no idea what connections he has made to be able to get this sound and would love it if anyone here could help work it out.
